How to Make Your Own Door Nameplates

There comes a time when your room becomes off-limits to parents, siblings and everybody else. Proclaim to one and all that this is your room by putting a homemade nameplate on the door. A photo of yourself will add a visual touch to the letters spelling out your name that is on the nameplate.

Things You'll Need

  • Newspaper
  • Foam core board
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Straightedge
  • Utility knife
  • Scissors
  • 1 foot string
  • Photo
  • White glue
  • Plastic letters
  • Bonding glue

Instructions

      Place a sheet of newspaper on a table. Place the foam core board on the newspaper. Measure an 8-inch by 10-inch rectangle on the board with a ruler and pencil. Cut out the rectangle with a straightedge and utility knife. Place the excess board aside.

      Rotate the rectangle so that an end is facing you. Measure two inches up from the bottom left corner and two inches in from the 2-inch mark. Make a dot on the board at this point. Measure two inches up from the bottom right corner and two inches in from the 2-inch mark. Make a dot on the board at this point.

      Cut through each dot with the point of a scissors. Run one end of string through the hole on the board that's to your left. Run the string beneath the board and up through the hole that's to your right. Tie a knot in the ends of the string. Tie a second knot in the ends of the string. Turn the board over.

      Place the photo facedown on the newspaper. Apply a dab of white glue to the corners and to the center of the photo. Turn the photo over. Line up the photo on the upper left corner of the board. Press the photo against the board and hold it there for a minute. Let the glue set for 10 minutes.

      Place the plastic letters that spell out your name facedown on the newspaper. Apply a line of bonding glue to the back of each letter. Turn the letters over. Place the letters in the order that spells out your name on the board in a diagonal line starting at the upper left corner beneath your photo and ending at the bottom right corner. Press the letters against the board and hold them there for a minute. Let the glue set overnight.

      Hang the loop of the string over the doorknob of your room̵7;s door. Alternately, you can push a pushpin into the door and hang the loop of your nameplate around it.
