How to Build a Foam Layout Boat

A foam layout boat is a type of raft that you can make from flotation devices used in pools, such as pool noodles. Pool noodles are pieces of cylindrical shaped polyethylene foam that are available in diameters ranging from 2 to 4 inches. By stringing these pool noodles together you can make a layout bed that is similar to a floating raft.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the eight pool noodles side-by-side on the ground. Measure the width with the tape measure.

    • 2

Add 24 inches to this measurement. Cut three pieces of nylon rope to this measurement with the scissors.

    • 3

Measure one pool noodle with a tape measure. Make a mark every 20 inches with a felt tip marker. You will have three marks on the pool noodle. Repeat this step with another five pool noodles. Make a 1/4-inch hole through the pool noodles with the power drill.

    • 4

Insert the nylon rope into the holes you made in the pool noodles and pull the rope taught. You want to have 12 inches of rope on each side of the pool noodles.

    • 5

Wrap a 12-inch end of the nylon rope around one of the remaining pool noodles and tie a knot. Repeat this step to tie the last pool noodle. Cut the excess nylon rope with the scissors.
