How to Backstitch in Hand Sewing

Backstitching is used in hand sewing and embroidery designs. It is made by moving your needle in small increments that run reverse for half of a stitch length. These stitches form edging for many sewing projects. Worked in a small even manner, tight backstitching follows any straight or curved lines of a sewing. The finished surface is slightly raised with this stitch. It can be used for fine detail work, if fine thread is used.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a standard size for your backstitch. This is determined by the size of your project and the amount of strength needed by the stitching.

    • 2

Thread your needle and make a knot on the end of the strand.

    • 3

Feed the needle up through the wrong side of your fabric, until the knot is snug against the back of the fabric.

    • 4

Make one stitch in the direction of your line of sewing.

    • 5

Bring the needle up through the back of the material again, piercing the fabric at the midway point of the first stitch.

    • 6

Make another stitch of the same size as the original one. Proceed in the reverse manner with all subsequent stitches. This creates a solid line of sewing that can move in any direction you desire.
