How to Stop Boat Air Conditioning Systems From Sucking in Mud

Boating in water that̵7;s shallow or clouded with silt might clog your boat's air-cooling system and overheat its motor. Keeping your boat̵7;s water-filter free of mud and debris is a necessary step in prolonging the life of the engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Stiff-bristle toothbrush
  • Water hose
  • Two bromine tablets

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hull door that provides access to the water filter.

    • 2

Turn off the seacock -- a valve typically found on the boat̵7;s hull -- if the filter is mounted below the waterline. This prevents water from flowing into the filter while you work.

    • 3

Remove the basket strainer from the housing.

    • 4

Scrub and remove excess or hardened mud lodged in the strainer. Use a toothbrush.

    • 5

Empty mud from the strainer and rinse it with water.

    • 6

Insert a water hose into the line connecting the filter; flush the cooling system. Most docks are equipped with water hoses.

    • 7

Drop two bromine tablets into the basket before mounting it. Bromine helps keep the lines clear.
