Painting Techniques to Make a Painting Look Old

New paintings typically have a bright, cheerful appearance that works well with many decorative styles. However, this look does not go with every decorative style. If you prefer an antique style of decoration, a brand new painting may not fit into your decorations. To fix this issue, you can transform any new painting to look like an old painting with the use of crackle paint and amber-tinted glaze. These two materials together help a painting look old and antique. You can use this technique on any painting, but it can devalue a painting to give it this treatment, so take care when using on originals.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint over the surface of the painting with crackle medium. This gives the painting the appearance it cracked slightly over time, with age and sun exposure. Allow the paint to dry for 30 minutes.

    • 2

Apply a thin layer of amber-tinted glaze over the painting with a paintbrush. Leave some space under the glaze for the original color of the paint to peak through. This gives the painting a more authentic appearance. Allow the glaze to dry at least two hours.

    • 3

Apply a second layer of glaze to seal the painting. Use clear glaze this time, to avoid making the painting too dark or dull to see. Allow the painting to dry overnight.
