How to Make Ceramic Bricks for a Kiln

You can make ceramic bricks for use in a decorative, non-load bearing wall or for a project such as a model train station. To harden ceramic, you must fire it in a kiln at high temperature for several hours. If you want to create realistic bricks with a consistent size and shape, you need to make a mold to craft your ceramic bricks.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a container with mixed Plaster of Paris. Use a container that measures taller, wider and longer than the brick you plan on molding.

    • 2

Place the brick you plan to recreate into the Plaster of Paris and then pull the brick out of the mold. Using a real brick to create the mold will create the texture of a brick in the Plaster of Paris mold. Allow at least 24 hours for the mold to harden.

    • 3

Mix the ceramic clay per the instructions provided with the clay. The mixing process differs depending on the type and brand of ceramic clay you use.

    • 4

Pack the clay tight into the mold starting with the corners. Press the clay into the mold in layers to avoid air pockets. Stop once you reach the top of the mold.

    • 5

Flip the mold over and slide the clay brick out of the mold. The clay brick is now ready for hardening in the kiln.
