How to Make a High-Pitched Noise on a Guitar

Standard guitars come equipped with six strings; the bottom E string has the highest pitch. However, you don't have to play the bottom string to get the highest sound from your instrument. By playing harmonics, you can use every string to produce a sound that will resonate at a high octave. A few other tricks will improve the range of notes that you can play on your guitar.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your pinkie finger, or a finger you use the best, as far up to the head, or body, of the guitar as possible. Place your finder on the nearest fret on the first string, which is the bottom string. Some guitars have a slot cut out at the head for you to move your hand all the way to the nearest fret.

    • 2

Pick the first string and bend it with your finger at the same time. The more you bend the string, the higher the sound. This is the highest sounding note on the guitar.

    • 3

Increase the gain on your guitar to the maximum if your guitar is electric. Most electric guitars have a volume and a gain knob. Gain can also be found on most amplifiers. Hold your finger very lightly over a string directly on top of the 12th, 7th, 5th or 3rd fret. These locations will create harmonics, which are extremely high sounds.

Push down the whammy bar on your guitar after you play a note to make the pitch even higher. The bar tightens the strings so that the sound gets higher. The bar comes standard on many electric guitars.
