How to Use Menhaden Oil for Fishing

Menhaden oil is fish oil, which is said to draw fish to an area and to make for easier fishing. Since it̵7;s oil, it diffuses through the water without dissolving into it, and fish that otherwise would be too far from your bait to pay attention to it will be able to sense that there is food nearby. Objects, such as concrete, may be soaked in the oil and then dropped into the water to diffuse it. It can also be used to soak chum, to make it seem more tempting and flavorful to the fish.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the broken piece of concrete in a bucket. Pour the menhaden oil over the concrete pieces until they are covered. Allow them to soak overnight.

    • 2

Remove the concrete pieces and place them in an empty bucket. Fold the cheesecloth over a few times so it seems relatively opaque. Place the cheesecloth over the oil-filled bucket. Secure it in place with the rubber band.

    • 3

Position the bucket filled with oil and covered with cheesecloth near the chum container, in an area that you don̵7;t mind getting dirty; you may want to wait until you̵7;ve already transported everything to near your fishing location. Hold the cheesecloth in place, and pour the menhaden oil through the cheesecloth and into the chum container, over the chum.

    • 4

Take the concrete pieces and chum onto your fishing boat. Drop the concrete from the boat, over a wide area of water ̵1; the entire area of water where you want to fish and especially where you hope to fish for bottom-dwellers.

    • 5

Place the amount of chum you want to use in a sack or mesh basket, and use as per usual.
