How to Replace a Guitar's Pick Guard

Replacing a pick guard isn't always necessary during the playable life of your guitar, but it can spruce up the appearance of a guitar that you have played for years. A pick guard is easy to take off and and reinstall and only requires you to use a screwdriver. Various guitar styles require different-shaped pick guards, so use caution when purchasing your new pick guard to ensure you buy the proper size.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn each tuning peg until each string comes off. Set the strings aside.

    • 2

Unscrew the pick guard. Keep the screws in an area where they won't get lost.

    • 3

Place the new pick guard over the location where the old pick guard was. Ensure it is the same size and the holes line up with the screw holes.

    • 4

Screw the old screws into the new pick guard. Drill new holes into the new pick guard if you need to make it line up.

    • 5

Replace the strings on the guitar. Tune the strings.
