How to Make a Paper Crossbow With Yarn

The crossbow was such a lethal weapon on the battlefield, that Pope Urban II banned its use against Christians in 1097. Today, crossbows are used in hunting. Investigating a rumor that an inmate in an Illinois Supermax prison killed another inmate with a paper crossbow, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman of the "MythBusters" TV series built a full-sized crossbow out of newspaper in 2006. You can make a smaller, much less dangerous paper crossbow from simple materials you may already have in your home.

Things You'll Need

  • 11 sheets of letter-sized paper
  • Paper cutter
  • Unsharpened #2 pencil
  • Electrical tape
  • Knitting yarn
  • Binder clip
  • 1/4 inch wide craft stick
  • Old scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Place six sheets of paper on the paper cutter. Cut them in half lengthwise. Place the halves of the top sheet to the side.

    • 2

Place the pencil on the end of one stack of the half sheets. Wrap the half sheet tightly around the pencil. To keep this newly created paper tube from unfurling, wrap a strip of electrical tape around each end. Do the same with the other stack of half sheets.

    • 3

Cut the craft stick in half with a pair of old scissors. Slide each half halfway into the paper tubes. Tightly wrap the tube halves opposite the craft sticks with electrical tape.

    • 4

Bend the paper tubes at the place where the electrical tape ends into L-shapes. These are your crossbow arms.

    • 5

Stack the remaining letter-sized sheets. Place the pencil on one of the 8 1/2-inch sides of the stack. Wrap the ends and the center of this tube with electrical tape. This is your crossbow's stock.

    • 6

Place the taped ends of the crossbow arms to the each side of the stock's front so that they form a T-shape. Fasten them to the stock by completely wrapping them with electrical tape.

    • 7

Tie the yarn to both ends of the craft sticks with knots. Wrap electrical tape around the knots to keep them from slipping off the craft sticks.

    • 8

Pull the yarn back across the stock so that the arms and yarn form an elongated diamond shape. Mark the yarn's position with a pencil. Place the binder clip's front against the mark. Wrap electrical tape around the clip's metal loop and the stock. The binder clip is the trigger.

    • 9

Place the pencil on the short end of one of the remaining half sheets. Wrap the half sheet loosely around the pencil so that it can slide easily through this paper tube. Wrap electrical tape around each of the tube's ends.

    • 10

Place the tube on the front crossbow's stock right between the crossbow arms. Wrap electrical tape around the tube and stock.
