How to Make a Homemade Flask & Condenser

A condenser is used to convert steam to a liquid during the distillation process. You can make your own condenser from distillation flasks as a school project. Distillation is a process that is used to remove the impurities from a liquid such as water. The water is heated to produce steam that is then condensed to a liquid. You can heat the water in the flask with a Bunsen burner or by using a hot plate.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the diameter of the opening for two glass flasks with a ruler. Find a rubber stopper that will fit both of the flasks.

    • 2

Drill a 1/4-inch hole into the center of the rubber stoppers by using the power drill.

    • 3

Insert one end of a 1/2-inch copper tube into the hole in one of the rubber stoppers. Push on the tube so 1 inch extends beyond the stopper. Insert the other end of the copper tube into the second stopper.

    • 4

Fill 3/4 of one flask with water. Press the rubber stopper into the opening. Run the copper tubing to the other flask. Insert the second rubber stopper into the opening.

    • 5

Apply heat to the flask containing the water. Continue to apply heat until the water comes to a boil. You will then begin to see steam flow up to the copper pipe. Water will then start to drip down into the other flask.
