How to Make an Airsoft Vest Out of Cloth

Airsoft guns are replicas of real weapons but do not use gunpowder to fire pellets. To participate safely in an airsoft gun ̶0;battle,̶1; you may wish to wear a vest that can protect you from the impact of the projectiles fired from opponents̵7; guns. You can make a vest at home out of cloth purchased at a craft store and common household tools.

Things You'll Need

T-shirt
3 pieces of burlap cloth, 20-by-28 inches
Straightedge
Grease pencil
Utility knife
Newspaper
Glue gun
Glue stick
Sewing needle
Black sewing thread
Scissors

Instructions

  Place one piece of the cloth on a table. Place a T-shirt that is one size smaller than you normally wear horizontally on the cloth with the neck facing to the left. Draw an outline around the T-shirt on the cloth with a grease pencil. Remove the T-shirt from the cloth.

  Place a straightedge vertically on the cloth to the right of the neckline drawn on the cloth. Draw a line across the cloth from one side to the other. Remove the straightedge. Make a dot at the halfway point on the line.

  Draw a line from the dot to each side at a 45-degree angle. Cut through the lines with the blade of a utility knife. Cut through the rest of the outline with the utility knife. Remove the excess material from the table.

  Place the second piece of cloth on the table. Place the cut-out vest pattern on top of the cloth on the table. Draw an outline around the vest pattern on the cloth with the grease pencil. Remove the vest pattern. Cut through the outline on the cloth that is on the table with the straightedge and utility knife. Repeat this procedure to make a third vest pattern piece from cloth.

  Place one of the cut pieces of cloth on the table horizontally. Wad sheets of newspaper into softball-sized balls for padding. Apply hot glue from a glue gun to one side of the wadded up balls. Place the glued side of the balls against the cloth and hold them there for 10 seconds before letting go. Repeat until the cloth is covered with the newspaper balls.

  Apply hot glue around the edges of the cloth. Place one of the vest pieces on top of the cloth that is on the table. Press the two together and hold them so that the glue will adhere. Release the cloth after 30 seconds.

  Place the third vest piece on the one on the table. Sew them together in a clockwise rotation until you return to where you started. Cut the thread with scissors and tie a double knot in the end. Apply a dab of hot glue over the end of the thread. Let a minute pass. Slip the protective vest you have made over your head with the padded side against your chest.
