Houston Scout Activities

Over 30 million children and adults from 161 countries around the world are proud to call themselves Scouts. Alumni include Steven Spielberg, Neil Armstrong, Mariah Carey, Barbara Walters and Dakota Fanning. Scouting troops in Houston, Texas, take part in a wide variety of activities from camping trips to environmental projects, and say their aim is to make ̶0;a real contribution to creating a better world.̶1;
  1. Houston Boy Scouts

    • Boy Scouts in Houston, Texas, are involved in general scouting activities like camping and gaining badges, as well as outings to Houston Astro and Dynamo matches and local museums. Houston Scouts perform valuable community services at the yearly Rivers, Lakes, Bays, and Bayous Trash Bash at Lake Houston Marina. Troops also contribute speeches and musical accompaniments to public ceremonies. The Sam Houston Area Council at the Cockrell Scout Center sends out a monthly newsletter, the eScouter, with details of activities, programs and upcoming events. Boys between the ages of 11 and 17 can join the Houston Boy Scouts for a $15 registration fee (price correct as of 2011).

    Houston Eagle Scouts

    • Two million, or 4 percent, of all Boy Scouts attain the highest rank of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scouts living and working in the Houston can register online at no cost with the Sam Houston Area Council, or ESA-SHAC. Eagle Scouts aim ̶0;to perpetuate the growth of Scouting through the power of adult Eagle Scout leadership.̶1; Activities include an annual gathering to welcome newcomers, mentoring other Eagle Scouts, leading Scout troops and organizing events to promote education and leadership development for young people. Eagle Scouts maintain active online Facebook, Twitter, Flikr and Linkedin profiles.

    Houston Girl Scouts

    • Girl Scouts of the USA have over 3 million members and celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2012. The Houston Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, or GSSJC, marks this occasion with the release of a "Just Desserts" cookbook, containing favorite Girl Scout cookie recipes. Proceeds from sales of the book fund Scout activities and programs, such as camps and making vintage 1912 Girl Scout uniforms. They also benefit the community with environmental activities like the Catalog Canceling Challenge. Programs and activities for Houston Girl Scouts range from outdoor canoeing and backpacking courses to career advice. Other activities, such as selling cookies and attending camp, are overseen by the GSSJC with a careful eye on security issues. As a safety precaution, locations of these activities are given to the general public. GSSJC troops accept girls from ages 5 to 17 and membership fees cost $12 a year, as of 2011. Adult women members are welcomed as troop leaders and organizers.

    Houston Sea and Venture Scouting

    • Scouting in the Houston area offers the choice of not only Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts of the USA troops, but also membership in combined male and female Sea Scout ships and Venture Scout crews for young adults between 14 and 20 years of age. As of 2011, registration costs $10 a year. Sea Scout troops, known as ̶0;ships,̶1; meet weekly or twice a month. Venture Scouts enjoy activities like aquatic and shooting sports, mountain biking and climbing, as well as first aid classes. Members organize monthly activities based on available resources, under the supervision of adult ̶0;skippers.̶1; Parental involvement and aid is welcomed.
