How to Avoid Flat Lighting in Photography

You probably aren't taking the best photos you are capable of. It's a shame, considering the amount of money you probably spent on your camera, that flat lighting constantly rears its ugly head in every photo you snap. Photos with dynamic lighting look more professional and look much more lifelike. Luckily, avoiding flat lighting is only a few tips and editing suggestions away from becoming a problem of the past.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the camera to "AI Servo Focus Mode" if using a Canon SLR camera to add increased depth when shooting images with high contrast differences.

    • 2

Lock the focus of the camera by holding the shutter button down half way while aiming at an object with a high contrast difference.

    • 3

Get within 24 inches of your subject to avoid loss of contrast.

    • 4

Add additional lighting sources to fully illuminate your subject. Place work lights in front of and around your subject.

    • 5

Edit the contrast ratio of your photograph in Photoshop or other photo editing programs.
In Photoshop, select "Layer," "New Adjustment Layer," "Contrast" and "Brightness" to adjust the contrast and brightness of your photo.
