DIY Wood Guitar Case

Protecting your musical instrument is crucial if you want to enjoy it for years to come. Storing your guitar in a hard-shell case can also help you to regulate the humidity it is resting in by using moisture absorbers to protect your guitar from aging or warping due to environmental hazards. Making a hard case for your guitar out of wood is relatively easy; however, you must have a working knowledge of safely using power tools before attempting this process.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4 inch plywood
  • Pencil
  • Jigsaw
  • Ruler
  • L-brackets
  • Cement spray
  • Nails
  • Canvas fabric
  • Knife
  • Styrofoam
  • Felt
  • Heavy-duty stapler

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your guitar with a tape measure. Adding an inch of buffer space to the length and width of your guitar's dimensions, measure a rectangle on a sheet of plywood for your guitar case. Outline another rectangle with the same dimensions so that you will have a top and bottom for your guitar case.

    • 2

Use a jigsaw to cut out the top and bottom of your wooden guitar case.

    • 3

Cut 1/4 inch thick panels to create a frame for the guitar case bottom. The 1/4 inch panels should equal the length of the case's top, bottom and sides and the width of the guitar's depth plus another inch.

    • 4

Use finish nails and cement spray to join the 1/4 strips together into the shape of a rectangular frame. Nail and cement the bottom plywood panel for the guitar case onto the frame. Optionally, for reinforced strength, you can also screw in L-brackets to secure the side panels to the bottom of the guitar case.

    • 5

Fasten a rugged, abrasion-resistant fabric, such as canvas, onto the bottom exterior of the guitar case, wrapping it around to the inside of the case itself. Use cement spray to secure the canvas to the exterior of the case.

    • 6

Use a sharp knife to cut a piece of Styrofoam to the shape of the interior of the guitar case. Place the Styrofoam in the interior of the case. Place the guitar into the guitar case so that it is centered in the case, resting on the Styrofoam. Trace the guitar with a marker. Use a sharp knife to cut the Styrofoam. Remove the Styrofoam piece that was cut out and glue the remaining outline of the Styrofoam into the case.

    • 7

Glue protective material into the bottom and sides of the case so that the material covers the entirety of the interior of the case. Protective material may include a layer of thick felt.

    • 8

Cut 1/4 inch-by-1 inch strips of lumber into a frame and glue it together. Staple the top of the guitar case onto the 1/4 inch-by-1 inch frame. Cover the exterior of the case's top with canvas, repeating the same process as covering the exterior of the bottom in Step 5.

    • 9

Glue felt to the inside of the top half of the guitar case. Set the top half of the case on top of the bottom half of the case.

    • 10

Screw in three to four latches to the left side of the case, joining the upper and lower halves. Screw in three hinges to the right side of the case, also joining the upper and lower halves. When finished, the top side of the case should unlatch and swing freely, allowing the guitar to be inserted or removed from the case.

    • 11

Cut a 2 inch-by-2 inch piece of wood that fits into the guitar case where the neck joins the body of the guitar. Cut out a notch into the wood where the neck can be supported while traveling around inside the case. Cover and glue the piece of wood with felt and glue it to the inside of the guitar case so that it supports the neck of the guitar.

    • 12

Screw or nail in the handle so that it is centered on the lower half of the guitar case and balances the guitar while being carried.

    • 13

Latch your guitar inside the newly constructed guitar case and walk away, knowing that your guitar is protected wherever you go.
