How to Snake a Wire Underneath Carpet

When installing a satellite or stereo system in your home, you may need to run wires to speakers in different areas of a room. To do this under carpet, you need to use a tool called a fish wire. You can find these at your local hardware or home improvement store. Snaking a wire under carpet is similar to fishing an electrical wire up through a wall.

Things You'll Need

Fish wire
Electrical tape

Instructions

  Push the end of the fish wire under the carpet. Continue until you reach the location of a cable or wire you want to run under the carpet.

  Tie the end of the fish wire to the cable or wire. Insert the end of the wire or cable into the hole at the round end of the fish wire. You can also attach the wire or cable with electrical tape.

  Pull the fish wire or turn the handle on the housing to begin winding the wire. This will snake the cable of wire under the carpet as the fish wire is being wound.

  Unhook the end of the fish wire from the cable or wire. Repeat this process to snake all wires under the carpet.
