How to Make a Wick for Fire With Cotton String

Fire-starters are a valuable item to have when you are camping or hiking in wet conditions. Dry firewood is not always available to start a fire outdoors. You can make your own fire-starter wicks for an extremely low cost to carry with you on treks. After you ignite the fire wick, you can place damp wood around it and the flame will dry the wood so it will light.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 pound paraffin wax
  • Pot
  • Cotton laundry string
  • Kitchen shears
  • Leather gloves
  • Pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Place one pound of paraffin wax in a large pot on the stove. Turn the stove burner on medium and allow the wax to melt completely. Turn the stove burner off.

    • 2

Cut about 5 feet from a cotton laundry line or string, using kitchen shears.

    • 3

Place the string in the paraffin wax. Put on leather gloves.

    • 4

Press the string down into the wax if needed, so it is thoroughly coated.

    • 5

Grasp one end of the string with pliers and pull it slowly straight up out of the pot. Let the bottom end of the string touch the side of the pot so excess wax can drip back in.

    • 6

Place the center of the string over a porch railing or a nail. Allow the wax to dry completely for about 15 minutes.

    • 7

Cut the wicks into approximately 4-inch lengths.
