How to Make Snap Rings

A snap ring is a type of retaining ring that is used to secure parts to shafts or bores for an assembly. The snap ring is a round metal ring that fits over the same size diameter object. You can make snap rings for your own use from any gauge of metal wire. To do this you will need to determine a size that is required for the snap ring.

  • Metal wire
  • Wooden dowel
  • Broom handle
  • Cutter pliers

      Determine the diameter needed for the snap rings. Find a wooden dowel that matches the diameter. You can also use a wooden broom handle.

      Wrap the metal wire or copper wire around the dowel to make a spring or coil. Pull the dowel or broom handle from the wire coil.

      Cut a snap ring from the end of the coil by using the cutter pliers. Repeat this step to cut additional snap rings from the wire coil.

      Repeat this process whenever you need to make additional snap rings.
