How to Use a Threading Hob

Threading hobs are an essential part of the machining process for gears, splines and sprockets. The threading hobs progressively cut into the gear blank as it revolves around on a turntable or a work jig. While dedicated hobbing machines are used to produce these gears, machinists without access to such a device can use an ordinary machine lathe to perform the task. With practice, cutting gears with a threading hob can be done quickly and inexpensively.

Instructions

    • 1

Mount the hob gear in between the spindle and tailstock of the lathe. Make sure the cutter and gear blank mesh properly.

    • 2

Bolt the worm gear turntable on the cross-slide of the lathe. Mount the worm wheel blank onto the turntable and set the hob gear against the worm gear.

    • 3

Set the lathe to operate at its lowest speed and turn it on. Advance the top-slide slowly after the gear has revolved around several times.

    • 4

Gradually increase the lathe̵7;s operating speed as the teeth on the worm gear are formed. Pour cutting fluid over the worm gear to keep it from overheating.

    • 5

Retract the top-slide and turn off the lathe. Allow the worm gear to cool before removing it from the turntable.
