How to Get a Good Sound When Playing Slide Guitar

Slide guitar has helped shape blues, rock and country music into what they are today. The style of guitar playing relies on a specially crafted piece of glass or metal -- called a slide-- that a guitarist wears on his finger then slides along the guitar's neck. Some musicians have used the necks of broken beer bottles, although these can be dangerous and are not recommended. A slide adds a soulful sound to one of the most widely used instruments in music.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a glass slide for a clearer sound. Metal slides have a more tinny sound, although some musicians prefer metal.

    • 2

Choose a slide that fits your finger. It should be approximately the length of the finger you are sliding with. Most guitar players slide with their ring finger.

    • 3

Rest the slide over the strings, rather than pressing down as you would when playing a chord with your fingers. This will ensure a clear sound while allowing you to easily maneuver the slide up and down the guitar's neck.

    • 4

Position the slide on top of the fret. This will prevent any distortion in the sound and ensure that each note is played accurately.

    • 5

Place your thumb in a position that allows you to move your hand easily. Some musicians put their thumb behind the neck while others find it easier to hold their thumb under the neck, beside their fingers.
