Things You'll Need
Instructions
Use a glass slide for a clearer sound. Metal slides have a more tinny sound, although some musicians prefer metal.
Choose a slide that fits your finger. It should be approximately the length of the finger you are sliding with. Most guitar players slide with their ring finger.
Rest the slide over the strings, rather than pressing down as you would when playing a chord with your fingers. This will ensure a clear sound while allowing you to easily maneuver the slide up and down the guitar's neck.
Position the slide on top of the fret. This will prevent any distortion in the sound and ensure that each note is played accurately.
Place your thumb in a position that allows you to move your hand easily. Some musicians put their thumb behind the neck while others find it easier to hold their thumb under the neck, beside their fingers.
