How to Grip a Cello Bow

The standard cello bow continues to be a version developed by John Dodd in the late 18th century. Since the equipment has remained nearly the same for centuries, the playing techniques essentially have, too. This holds especially true for gripping the bow. Each finger has its proper place, and the thumb must oppose the other digits in a specific relation. The fingers should point to the right of the lap, and the grip should be light rather than strong.

Instructions

    • 1

Grab the cello bow with the right hand, with the stick pointing to the left as you sit.

    • 2

Place the thumb between the stick and the "frog" or rubber component attached to the stick.

    • 3

Rest the index, middle and ring fingers on top of the stick, opposed to the thumb. The middle finger should sit more or less directly above the thumb.

    • 4

Set the first joint of the first (index) finger near the front of the metal pad of the main stick.

    • 5

Angle the fingers so the tips are pointing slightly to the right of your lap. This allows freer movement of the bow while playing.

    • 6

Rest the thumb between the frog and the leather pad, but allow the pinkie finger hover over the stick rather than rest on it.
