How to Not Get Speed Wobbles on a Skateboard

Avoid speed wobbles on a skateboard by practicing your riding technique and adjusting the tightness of your board's trucks. Speed wobbles occur when high speeds are reached, usually on a steep hill. Perfecting your ability to distribute your weight properly, along with footbreaking and slides, will help prevent speed wobbles that may cause you to lose control of the skateboard. Finding the right degree of tightness on both trucks is also essential for preventing the wobbles that may lead to a serious fall.

Adjust both your trucks with a skate tool. Turn each truck's wingnut to the left to tighten the trucks, if the speed wobbles are happening from being too loose. Turn the skate tool to the right if the trucks are too tight, which can also cause speed wobbles to occur. Repeat until you have found the proper tightness to support your weight.

    • 2

Try to relax. Concentrate on keeping your body as loose as possible, because flexibility assists in making the turns as needed.

    • 3

Distribute your weight over the front truck as you ride down the hill. This will help with overall stability and control over your turns.

    • 4

Practice your footbreaks. Take your back foot off the board, while the front foot remains over the front truck with your weight balanced over it. Place your back foot on the ground to stop your skateboard wheels from turning and come to a stop.

    • 5

Practice on the hill from a lower level than its peak, until you have total control and understanding of what to expect during the run. Repeat until you are able to ride from the hill's highest point with confidence in your control technique.
