How to Keep Raccoons Out of Your Camp

Camping is a relaxing and entertaining hobby. However, a run in with a raccoon can ruin your trip. Raccoons and other wildlife find humans interesting and can smell food, perfumes and other toiletries kept at your campsite. To avoid a ruined camping trip, you must be cautious and properly prepare yourself for your trip. By keeping the things that attract raccoons away from your campsite, you lower your chances of an unwanted raccoon encounter during your trip.

Instructions

    • 1

Prep your camping items before you leave for your camping trip. Wrap all food in plastic wrap and store food in sandwich bags. Place non-perishable food in a large trash bag and close it tightly. Freeze several bottles or gallons of water and place them in a cooler. Put your perishable foods in the cooler.

    • 2

Keep your food in the car or tie a rope around the trash bag of non-perishable food, and hang it high in a tree. Wrap rope around your cooler several times to keep it securely closed. Tie the cooler around a picnic table or tree trunk away from the campsite. If at all possible, keep the cooler in your car.

Get rid of trash immediately. At public camp grounds, throw the trash into a trashcan. With rogue camping, place your trash in a trash bag and hang it high in a tree just like you would with your food. Another option is to burn your trash in your fire pit.

Use unscented toiletries. Raccoons and other wildlife are attracted to new scents. Use unscented deodorant and mild toothpaste. Pack your toiletries in an air tight container when you finish using them. Avoid washing near or at the campground. Any spilled toothpaste can attract raccoons.
