Totem Pole for a Boy Scout Project

Being part of a Boy Scout troop is a wonderful opportunity for boys to contribute to their local community, to understand the importance of volunteer work and to experience working together as a team. Boy Scouts receive merit badges when they complete various projects and tasks. One of those projects is being able to create and design a totem pole.
  1. Plans

    • It is essential to have totem pole building plans before even beginning the project. The plans specify the details of the totem pole. As you see the plans, it is then possible to find that ideal location for your totem pole to be displayed. As with most project plans, specific tools are listed in order to complete the project. By preparing in advance, Boy Scouts are able to then build their totem pole with ease.

    Skills

    • Boy Scouts need the necessary skills for wood working projects.

As Boy Scouts gather the necessary materials and tools for the totem pole project, scouts must demonstrate to the troop leader that they possess the knowledge and skills to woodwork. In case of injury while completing the project, Boy Scouts must prove that they know the basics of first aid. Boy Scouts need to explain the care and use of the tools which will be utilized for the wood carving project.

    Materials

    • Wood carving tools, sharpening devices, and the wood itself are the main materials that are necessary for Boy Scouts to construct their totem pole. Scouts must explain to leaders why they chose a specific type of wood for their pole. This explanation shows the leaders that the Scouts know that various types of wood are more appropriate for certain projects.

    Constructing

    • Building a totem pole together, enables Boy Scout troops to have a life-long bond with one another.

A sense of accomplishment comes with the building of a totem pole. Boy Scouts feel secure in knowing that they possess the know-how, the understanding of how tools work and the feeling of teamwork. Not only does constructing a totem pole bring a Boy Scout troop together, but it gives them life long skills for the future. The totem pole that remains shows the community what can happen when everyone works as one.
