How to Make a Graffiti Blackbook

A graffiti blackbook is the standard sketchbook used by graffiti artists to plan upcoming graffiti projects and to express themselves artistically wherever they are. A blackbook may also be used to collect the artwork of other artists and is a coveted item that most artists guard and protect closely. You can make your own graffiti blackbook by following a few simple steps, and get started on your way toward making and preserving notable pieces of graffiti art.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a graffiti blackbook online via a site such as Pure G, 33 Third, or even Amazon. Instead of purchasing a formal blackbook, many people decide instead to simply purchase a mainstream sketchbook with a black cover. The standard blackbook is 8.5 by 11 inches in size, but you can make it as large or small as you like. Ensure your sketchbook has thick pages that are either white or off white, so your projects hold up well and can sustain any color.

    • 2

Sketch your graffiti ideas onto the pages of the book, using a pencil or a black marker. Color in your sketches however you'd like ̵1; shades of gray and black, or full color. If your sketch is a plan for a larger piece of graffiti, sketch in the margin any important details such as actual size for the final project, where it will be located, people who will be tagging with you and their phone numbers.

    • 3

Save some pages in your blackbook for other taggers. Creating a blackbook is all about creativity and community ̵1; form alliances with other graffiti artists by inviting them to write in your book, and vice versa. Save the work of these taggers with respect ̵1; don't steal ideas or claim them as your own.

    • 4

Keep your completed black book in a safe place away from other taggers or individuals who would not appreciate your work. Start a new book when you run out of pages ̵1; do not tag on the back of a page, as it will likely bleed through, ruining both pieces of art on the paper.
