How to Dye a Quilt

All-purpose fabric dyes can successfully dye a number of different fabrics, including quilts, and can be found in any craft or fabric store. White or light colored fabrics made of 100 percent cotton are not only the easiest to dye, but will also render the truest colors. If your material is not 100 percent cotton or white, you can use a color and fabric chart to help you choose the best color for your quilt.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Weigh your quilt on a scale to find the approximate weight of your fabric and to determine how much dye you'll need.

    • 2

Start your washing machine's wash cycle, set the water level on "High" and set your water temperature to "Hot."

    • 3

Shake your bottles of liquid dye thoroughly to ensure the dye is well mixed. Pour 1 1/2 to 2 bottles of dye--depending on the weight of your quilt--directly into your washing machine to create the dye bath.

    • 4

Saturate your quilt under warm tap water. Squeeze out the excess water from the quilt, then wring out the quilt as best you can. Then smooth the quilt to remove bulges, wrinkles and crumpled areas.

    • 5

Place the quilt into the dye bath, wrapping the quilt around the agitator to avoid crumpling and dyeing it improperly.

    • 6

Allow the quilt to dye in your washing machine for 30 minutes to one hour. The longer the quilt is left in the dye bath, the brighter the color will be.

    • 7

Remove your quilt from the washing machine, and rinse out all excess dye with cold tap water. Dry your quilt in your dryer or hang it to dry.

    • 8

Restart your washing machine, set the water level on "High" and set your water temperature to "Hot." Add 1 capful of laundry detergent and 1 cup of chlorine bleach to the hot water to clean out your washing machine. Allow your washing machine to run as normal.
