Things You'll Need
Instructions
Cut a piece of wood cube measuring 3 1/2 inches on all sides, using a band saw. Draw a straight line on top of the cube parallel to its side and aligned three-quarters of an inch from the edge of the wood. Draw three more parallel lines following the first line, but align all lines three-quarters of an inch apart.
Locate the side adjacent to the side mentioned in Step 1. Measure three inches from this side and draw a line parallel to the edge of the wood. Draw three more parallel lines at three-quarters-inch intervals starting from the first line. At this point, the lines on top of the wood should resemble lines in a graph paper used by high school students.
Drill a hole on each point where the horizontal lines and vertical lines intersect, using a power drill. Drill each hole up to a depth of 1 1/2 inches, using a three-eighths-inch diameter drill bit. Following the above measurements, there should be 16 holes on top of the wood.
Smooth all edges and surfaces of the wood with medium-grit sandpaper, then wipe surfaces clean with a dry rag. Use a thin paintbrush to paint the top side of the cube neatly with oil-based enamel paint of your preferred color, but avoid applying too much paint inside the holes. Allow the paint to dry overnight.
Cut a piece of felt measuring 3 1/2 inches wide and 14 1/2 inches long, then wrap the felt around the sides of the cube, using white glue. Align the edges of the felt paper with the top and bottom edges of the wood.
Draw 36 outlines of a small circle on four different colors of felt paper, using a small coin. Draw eight circles per color of felt paper, then cut out the circles with scissors. Glue the circles onto each side of the cube according to the color combinations and arrangement that appeals to you. Allow the glue to dry for several hours, then place the cute pencil holder on top of your desk.
