How to Determine Splice Sites

A splice is used to connect two pieces of wire together. If you have a break in a wire or cable, it will need to be spliced back together. The site for a splice is where the break in the wire has occurred. To find the site for the splice, you can use an electronic detection device. If you have an electronic fence around your yard, a break in a wire can easily be found with an RF choke.

Instructions

    • 1

      Power on the AM radio. Set the radio to a station between 60 and 600.

    • 2

      Disconnect the power cord for the device. If you have an electric dog fence, you will need to disconnect the transmitter from the electrical outlet.

    • 3

      Find the two wire leads that attach to the transmitter. Remove these wires by untwisting them from the connections.

    • 4

      Attach the leads for wires to the legs of the RF choke. Attach the RF choke to the connections that are on the transmitter.

    • 5

      Plug the transmitter back into the electrical outlet. Turn the indicator on the RF choke to the right. This will set the signal strength to ̶0;High.̶1;

    • 6

      Walk the perimeter of the fence with the AM radio. Listen for any changes to the audio that comes from the radio. An interrupted signal indicates a break in the wire and where a splice is required.
