How to Knit the Last Row in a Scarf

Knitting generally involves using two or more needles to create stitches and join them together. No matter what stitch you use to make the item, any piece of work ̵2; including a scarf, which is usually produced on two needles ̵2; ends with a final row of knitted or purled stitches that must be removed from the needles to finish it. This process is called casting off or binding off, and involves removing each completed stitch from the needle at a time. Removing the stitches from the needles seals the edge of the scarf and keeps it from unraveling.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the finished scarf from one end to the other end that is still on the needle to be sure it fulfills the length requirement listed in the instructions for that project.

    • 2

Knit or purl two stitches to begin the final row, creating two stitches on the right needle.

    • 3

Slip the point of the left needle into the first stitch you knitted or purled on the right needle.

    • 4

Pick up the first stitch you knitted or purled and pull it over the second stitch and over the point of the needle, leaving a single stitch on the right needle.

    • 5

Knit another stitch, and repeat steps 3 and 4, pulling the stitch that remained on the needle over the one you just knitted or purled.

    • 6

Continue casting off in this manner, repeating steps 3 and 4, until you are left with one stitch on the right needle.

    • 7

Set the other needle aside, as you no longer need it.

    • 8

Cut the yarn, leaving about 6 inches, and carefully pull the right needle out from the last stitch.

    • 9

Pass the end of the yarn through the stitch, pull it tightly to secure it, and run it through a second time to reinforce the knot.

    • 10

Run the end of the yarn through the eye of the darning needle and weave it into the stitches on the scarf.
