How to Cut Wood With Precision

Precise cuts that are needed on a piece of wood or board can be done by using a table saw or your miter saw. Both of these types of saws can make straight and accurate cuts into wood. A table saw has a blade that spins on a stationary table, while the miter saw has a spinning blade that is attached to a lever that you pull down to make a cut into a piece of wood.

Instructions

  1. Table Saw

    • 1

Measure the width of the board with a tape measure. Make a mark on the end of the board where you need to make the cut with the pencil.

    • 2

Set the fence or guide of the table saw to the required size for the cut. Verify the distance from fence to the blade with the tape measure.

    • 3

Set the edge of the board on the table saw against the fence. Align the blade with the mark that is on the end of the board.

    • 4

Turn on the table saw to engage the blade. Press down on the board and push it into the blade. Continue to push on the board until it is through the blade.

    Miter Saw

    • 5

Measure the board that you want to cut with a tape measure. Make a pencil mark to indicate where to cut the board.

    • 6

Set the edge of the board against the fence of the saw. Set the clamps on the edge of the miter saw for shorter length boards.

    • 7

Press the button to engage the laser, if one is equipped on your miter saw. Align the saw blade with the pencil mark on the wood.

    • 8

Press the trigger to engage the saw blade. Pull down on the handle to cut through the board. Pull up on the handle and depress the trigger to stop the blade.
