How to Calculate the Number of Data Bytes in a Bar Code

Barcodes are used to store various types of information. These are typically found on products that range from cereal to price tags. One type of barcode that is used to store information and can be read by using a smartphone is an Aztec barcode. This type of barcode uses concentric circles with rectangles of pixels that are called bitfields. You can calculate the bytes in this type of barcode by using a look-up chart.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of the bar with the ruler. Make a note of the width or the height of the barcode on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Cross-reference the measurements by going to the Web page for the Barcode Generator look-up chart.

    • 3

Find the size for the barcode in the ̶0;Layer̶1; column. The size is the length or width you measured in Step 1.

    • 4

Look in the ̶0;Bytes̶1; column to find the number of data bytes for the barcode.

    • 5

Repeat this process to find the number of data bytes for other sizes of Aztec barcodes.
