How to Make Straight Lines on an Art Projector

An art projector is used to trace a design or image that can then be painted or embellished by an artist or artist-to-be. To make sure that the projector is displaying straight lines, even the projector so that it is level vertically and horizontally. A tool commonly found in most home toolboxes is needed.

  1. Horizontal Art Projector

    • 1

      Place the horizontal art projector on a table. Lift the projector̵7;s lid and place an image, for example, a magazine clipping or a photograph that will be traced face down on the glass. Close the lid. Plug the projector̵7;s power cord into a wall outlet.

      Aim the lens at the front of the projector at a wall. Place a sheet of white tracing paper on the wall in front of the lens. Tape the paper to the wall with strips of masking tape.

      Turn the projector on. Adjust the positioning of the projector so that the image being projected is on the paper. Turn the focus knob on the side of the projector until the image is sharp. Turn the projector off. Let 10 minutes pass so that the projector̵7;s bulb cools.

      Open the lid of the projector and remove the image from the glass. Place the image aside. Place a spirit level on the glass horizontally. Rotate the front left and back left legs on the projector until the bubble on the level is between the two imprinted lines.

      Rotate the level 90 degrees. Repeat this procedure with the front left and back left legs on the projector. Remove the spirit level. Place the image back on the glass. Close the lid. Turn the projector on to see the image on the paper with all of the lines now straight.

    Vertical Art Projector

      Place the vertical art projector on a table. Lift the projector̵7;s lid and place an image, for example, a magazine clipping or a photograph face up on the surface. Close the lid. Plug the projector̵7;s power cord into a wall outlet.

      Place a sheet of white tracing paper on the base of the projector. Tape the sides of the paper to the base with strips of masking tape.

      Turn the projector on. Rotate the knob counterclockwise on the side of the pole to which the lens assembly is attached . Raise or lower the assembly until the image being projected fills the paper. Tighten the knob. Rotate the focus knob on the side of the assembly back and forth until the image is sharp. Turn the projector off and let 10 minutes pass.

      Place a spirit level horizontally on the paper near the center. Lift the left side of the projector̵7;s base and place a wadded piece of cardboard beneath it. Adjust the base until the bubble on the level is between the two imprinted lines.

      Rotate the level 90 degrees. Repeat the procedure just completed with another wadded piece of cardboard and the front edge of the base. Turn the projector on. Adjust the focus as necessary so that the lines of the image are as sharp as possible.
