DIY LP Record Storage in Old File Cabinets

Storing your collection of LPs can take up a lot of space in your home depending on how many you have. Although you may want to de-clutter your home, getting rid of old LP records can be difficult since they may have real or sentimental value. A solution is converting old filing cabinets into LP storage, which you can accomplish using a few simple items.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the amount of space inside the filing drawer. Most LPs measure about 12 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches, so your space needs to be a little bigger than this for the height and width. The depth will depend on how many records you want the drawer to hold.

    • 2

Organize your LP records using any system that makes sense to you. Typically, albums are organized by artist, but you could organize them by year, name or genre.

    • 3

Place file placards between each major section in the cabinet and label them according to your chosen filing system.

    • 4

Mark the outside of the cabinet with the contents in the filing drawers. You may also want to develop an electronic record of the LP records contained inside the cabinet.
