How to Balance in Singing

Finding balance is a component of singing that will make your voice resonate while not losing its fullness. Some people try to sing too powerfully and have a "mouthy" tone to their voice that doesn't resonate at the higher octave. Balance aims to combine the lower notes with the higher notes, creating body to your voice. Singers often go too far one way or the other and sound far from appealing. A few lessons can balance your pitch.

Instructions

    • 1

Push each side of your cheeks down with the tip of each index finger. Blow out slowly through your lips to create a bubbling sound.

    • 2

Continue to blow through your lips and do your scales. Alternatively, you can blow out the notes of a section of your favorite song that using both high and low notes.

    • 3

Take note of how your chest, throat and nose feels when you hit the high, medium and low notes. You can use this as a foundation to determine when you are using your entire singing pallet. Take your fingers off your cheeks.

    • 4

Sing "ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma" lightly into your nasal cavity just above your mouth when singer higher notes. You should feel a vibration in your nose similar to what you felt in Step 2 when hitting the high notes on the scales. This is called your head voice.

    • 5

Try the "ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma" formation while feeling the air through your chest and throat at the same time. When you can combine Step 4 and 5 to the point where you are singing above and below the soft pallet, you have balanced your voice.
