How to Make a Racing Gaming Chair Out of PVC Pipe

Video games can duplicate the visual experience of car racing, but being seated in a regular chair reminds the gamer that it is only a simulation. Make your own race car-type gaming chair from PVC pipes to make racing games more exciting. Supplies from a hardware store are needed, but no special tools. The chair can be disassembled when not in use so it will not take up valuable space.

Things You'll Need

Plastic tarp
2 PVC pipes, 4 feet long, 1/2 inch diameter
4 PVC 3-way elbow joints, 1/2 inch diameter
2 PVC pipes, 3 feet long, 1/2 inch diameter
Acrylic square, 10-by-10-by-2 inches
Ruler
Pencil
2 PVC pipes, 1 foot long, 1/2 inch diameter
Bonding glue
2 PVC pipes, 2 feet long, 1/2 inch diameter
2 padded matts, 2-by-2-by 4 feet
Game console steering wheel controller
Video game console
Race car video game

Instructions

  Place a plastic tarp on the floor. Place two 4-foot PVC pipes vertically on the tarp, side by side. Separate the two pipes by 2 feet. Insert the end of each pipe that is farthest from you into a PVC three-way elbow joint. Rotate the joint so that the opening at the middle is pointing upwards.

  Insert an end of a 3-foot PVC pipe into the holes on the joints that are farthest from you. Place an elbow joint on each of the ends of the two pipes just placed on the tarp. Rotate the joints so that one end of each joint points to the other. Insert the ends of a 2-foot PVC pipe into the hole on each joint.

  Place the acrylic square on the tarp. Measure 2 inches in from each side and make a dot with a pencil. Apply bonding glue to each dot. Place an end of a 1-foot PVC pipe against each dot. Press the pipe against each dot for a minute until the glue takes hold. Apply a line of bonding glue around the rim of each pipe where it meets the acrylic square. Let the glue set overnight.

  Turn the acrylic square over. Insert the ends of each of the two PVC pipes into the holes pointing upward in the three-way elbow joints.

  Place a three-way elbow joint on each of the two ends of the 4-foot PVC pipes. Rotate the joints so that one end of each joint points to the other and the hole in the middle points upward. Insert the ends of a 2-foot PVC pipe into the hole on each joint that faces the other.

  Insert an end of a 2-foot PVC pipe into each of the holes facing up on the joints. Place an elbow joint on the top of each of the 2-foot PVC pipes. Rotate the joints so that the hole on each faces the other. Insert the ends of a 2-foot PVC pipe into the hole on each joint.

  Remove the tarp from beneath the PVC pipes that are now your racing-car game chair. Place one of the padded mats against the pipes closest to you on the side that faces the acrylic sheet. Place the other mat on the floor between the two vertical pipes.

  Place a game console steering wheel controller on the acrylic sheet. Plug the controller into the game-controller port on the video game console. Insert a racing game into the console. Sit on the mat and face the controller. Grip the steering wheel and prepare to race like you have never raced before.
