Refinishing Wood Oars

Whether you're rowing for pleasure around a lake, enjoying the sunshine and breeze, or rowing competitively with a team of athletes, you need to take good care of your oars so they don't deteriorate. Water, sun and oxygen can damage wooden oars over time. Refinishing them to protect them from the elements will ensure that they last for years.

Things You'll Need

  • Sandpaper
  • Tarp

Instructions

    • 1

Sand down the oars with sandpaper. Remove all paint and epoxy finish so that the wood is bare.

    • 2

Lay out a tarp in a well-ventilated area. Lay the oar on it and put on a pair of latex gloves.

    • 3

Paint the oar with polyurethane. This will seal the wood and protect it. Apply the polyurethane to one side, wait for it to dry, then flip the oar and apply the polyurethane to the other side.

    • 4

Apply a second coat of polyurethane and let it dry.
