How to Do an Easy Ripple Crochet Stitch

The crocheted ripple pattern, also called the chevron pattern, is used to make blankets, afghans, table runners, scarves and shawls. This interesting pattern uses repeating stitch increases and decreases to form peaks and troughs, forming a zig-zag pattern. This pattern, well suited for beginners, uses only basic stitches, the chain and double crochet stitches. To form the repeating chevrons, only one stitch-pattern row is repeated. The project may be crocheted using a single color; however, multiple yarn colors may be used for an embroidered bargello effect.

Do 2 dc (double crochet) in second ch (chain) from hook, then 1 dc in in each of the next 3 chs. Skip 2 chs. Return to the starting point of the stitch point for a second row. Double crochet in next 4 ch stitches (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch, then dc in next 4 ch. Skip the next 2 ch. Repeat the stitch pattern from the starting point across to last 4 ch. Double crochet in next 3 ch. Do 2 dc in last ch.

Chain 2 and turn to begin the second row. The second row will begin at the first peak. Do 2 dc in first stitch. Double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches. Skip the next 2 stitches. Return to starting point. Double crochet in next 4 stitches (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch 1 space. Double crochet in next 4 stitches. Skip the next 2 stitches. Chain 2 and turn to begin the third row. Repeat row 2. Notice that at each peak, the ch 2 space forms a pointed apex in the row. The troughs or lowest points are formed when you decrease stitches by skipping two stitches from the previous row. Continue repeating row 2 until your project reaches the desired length.
