How to Get a Clean Sound From a Distorted Electric Guitar

Electric guitars hooked to distortion pedals often need a few adjustments both to the guitar and to the amplifier to eradicate unwanted sound. Depending on which type of distortion you use, you will need to make these adjustments every time you switch your guitar distortion. The adjustments you make to your guitar and will depend on the type of distortion pedal you use, but with all pedals you will need to adjust the same knobs while playing notes or chords to find your sound of choice.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the tone on the guitar to get rid of any fuzziness. Generally, the more tone you add, the less fuzzy your sound.

    • 2

Turn up the guitar's volume. At the same time, you can turn down the volume on the amplifier. The higher you turn the volume on the guitar, the less interference you will hear.

    • 3

Turn the noise suppressor to "Maximum" on your amplifier. This will get rid of a fuzzy sound that can often get in the way of clean distortion.

    • 4

Adjust the gain on your amplifier until you don't hear any more "mess" in the sound. Make adjustments to the suppressor at the same time to find a balance. A lower gain will cut the feedback after you finish strumming a note or chord.

    • 5

Put a hair band on the neck behind the first fret. This will prevent the open strings from over vibrating.
