How to Invisibly Whipstitch Crocheted Squares

Many techniques may be used to join crocheted square motifs to create large projects such as scarves, shawls, afghans and blankets. For a nearly-invisible transition between the crocheted squares, yarn that matches the outer borders of the squares is used to sew the motifs together. If the motifs are made of different colored yarns, the color and value of the joining yarn should not form a strong contrast with the yarns used on the edges of the motifs.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the two square motifs that you plan to join on a flat surface, face-up. Note that the outer edges of the motifs have a braid-like chain; each edge stitch has a front loop and a back loop. Align the edges that will be joined. Turn one motif face-down on top of the other motif, so right sides are facing each other.

    • 2

Cut a piece of yarn to a length of about 36 inches. Thread a tapestry needle onto one end of the yarn.

    • 3

Hold the two motifs together, wrong-side-out, with the joining edges aligned. Push the tapestry needle through only the back loops of the aligned motifs, at the first corner. Pull the needle until there is length of hanging yarn that is only about 3 to 4 inches. Secure the free end of the yarn by tying it to the yarn attached to the needle.

    • 4

Create a whip stitch by wrapping the yarn over the edge of the joined motifs, then inserting the needle into the back loops of the next edge stitch in the motif. Pull the needle to form a snug stitch. Wrap the yarn over the edge and push the needle through the back loops of the next stitch.

    • 5

Continue whip stitching along the edge until you reach the ends of the motifs. Tie-off and trim excess yarn. When you open the seam and turn the joined motifs face-up, the joining stitches will be nearly invisible.
