How to Repaint Diver Decoys

Faded and worn diving decoys are less likely to attract waterfowl near enough to hunt. Increase your hunting success by repainting diver decoys. Repainting your diver decoys makes the colors more vivid and more realistic. The more realistic the decoys, the more likely they are to attract waterfowl to your area. Paint with paint brushes or spray paint. Use an exterior or oil-based paint so the paint job tolerates the water the decoys are used in.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the diving decoys to remove dust, dirt and debris. Allow the decoys to dry overnight.

    • 2

Sand any chipped areas of the decoy with a high-grit sandpaper. Wipe down the entire diver decoy with a tack cloth to remove the sawdust created by sanding.

    • 3

Shake paints thoroughly to make sure they're mixed. Dip a small brush into the paint and paint the diver decoy. Paint over the existing paint with the same color to create a clean, fresh diver decoy. If spray-painting, tape off the areas not being painted with plastic and low-tack painter's tape. Spray the decoy with the appropriate paint color. Remove the plastic and allow the decoy to dry overnight before masking and painting another section. Repeat this process until the entire decoy is painted.
