Fishing and Golf
Fishing and golf are perhaps the two favorite pastimes of adult men in America. Both are relaxing, take place in quiet environments and can be done for competition as well as for sheer enjoyment. They allow you time away from the stresses of work and personal life. In addition, they take place outdoors, so you can get rejuvenating fresh air and appreciate the beauty of nature.
Music
Learning about music and playing a musical instrument can be exciting hobbies to pick up during your 40s. Whether it's writing songs, learning how to use and control your singing voice or playing the guitar, if you are determined and put effort into practicing, you will be a successful musician and may even draw the attention of those who hear your music. Another wonderful thing about music is that there are so many styles -- there's something for everyone, whether you prefer oldies, rock 'n' roll, hip-hop, orchestral scores, country or quiet, peaceful music.
Studying and Learning
Perhaps you have always had a passion to know more. Becoming a master of a particular subject is a hobby that may prove useful in the future. You can return to school to get a degree; read books about or research the Internet for subjects that interest you, such as aviation, cars or sports; or immerse yourself in the environment where your hobby takes place. For example, if you want to learn a new language, you may wish to travel to places where the people speak that language or surround yourself with friends who also speak or want to learn the language.
Volunteering
Helping others rarely goes unrewarded. Whether you are helped in return, receive an unexpected blessing or gain personal peace and satisfaction, volunteering your time and assets for those who may need them is always a good hobby. When you volunteer, you affect lives in many ways, likely without fully realizing it. Volunteering does not have to be a large, flashy production. It can be as simple as listening to someone who seems distracted at work. Perhaps he is going through a rough time and you are the only person who cares enough to hear what he has to say.
