How to Make a Sectional Link Bar

To demonstrate how a sectional link bar operates, you can build a model from wood. This will show the same type of movement that causes the windshield wipers on a car to oscillate. The sectional link bar will have two pivot points. A pivoting bar is attached to each pivot point by a fourth connecting bar. As one connecting bar moves, it will cause the opposite bar to oscillate.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-inch by 2-inch board
  • Pencil
  • Circular saw
  • Power drill
  • Pins
  • Bolts

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the 1-by-2-inch board to 3 inches. Make a cut mark with the pencil and then cut a section to this length with a circular saw.

    • 2

Measure and cut a second section to 4 inches. Measure and cut a third section to 5 1/2 inches. Measure and cut a fourth section to 6 inches.

    • 3

Measure down 1/2 an inch on each end of the cut pieces of 1-by-2-inch board. Make a mark using the pencil and then drill a hole with the power drill.

    • 4

Place the 3-inch and 4-inch pieces vertically side-by-side on a table. Place the 5 1/2-inch and the 6-inch pieces parallel so they are perpendicular to the side pieces. You should have the shape of a box.

    • 5

Align the holes at each corner and then insert a pin. If you do not have a pin, you can use a bolt secured by a nut.

    • 6

Hold the 6-inch section of wood to prevent it from moving. Turn the 3-inch section and you will see the 4-inch section begin to oscillate.
