How to Install 30 Amp RV Shore Power

An RV (recreational vehicle) is used for camping and vacation road trips. Sometimes, the number and types of accessories used on an RV can put a strain on the vehicle's electrical system. To help with the demand, many camping locations install 30-amp, RV "shore power." This is basically a 30-amp, 120V (volt) circuit running from the main electrical panel to a 30-amp receptacle close to the RV. A 30-amp extension cord can be used to hook the RV up to the receptacle.

Things You'll Need

  • Single pole, 30-amp breaker
  • 8-2 electrical wire
  • 30-amp receptacle
  • Weatherproof junction box and cover
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • Screwdriver
  • Mounting screws
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where the receptacle will be located. Push one end of the 8-2 electrical wire up into the weatherproof junction box. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation off of the ends of the black and white wires. Connect the black wire to the bronze terminal of the receptacle and connect the white wire to the silver terminal of the receptacle. Connect the ground wire to the ground terminal of the receptacle.

    • 2

Secure the receptacle inside the weatherproof junction box and mount the junction box in the pre-determined location using screws and the screwdriver. Extend the cable from the receptacle back to the main power panel. The wire can be buried or run through conduit, depending on what is available.

    • 3

Shut off power to the main power panel. Use the screwdriver to open and remove the breaker cover. Push the electrical wire up into the breaker panel through one of the knockouts in the bottom of the panel. Strip 1/2 inch of electrical wire off of the black and white wire you just pushed into the power panel. Connect the ground wire and the white wire to one of the two neutral bus bars located to the left and right of the breakers. Tighten the connection using the screwdriver.

Take the black wire and connect it to the screw terminal on the new 30-amp breaker. Plug the 30-amp breaker into the next available breaker slot. Take the breaker cover and knock out the next breaker cover knockout so that the new breaker will not prevent re-installation of the breaker cover. Secure the breaker cover and turn the main power back on.
