How to Wire a Brushless RC Motor

Brushless radio controlled motors always have three electrical connectors rather than a brushed motor's two connectors. The difference between brushed and brushless motors is that in a brushed motor the permanent magnets are connected to the case of the motor and the electromagnet spins. In a brushless motor, the electromagnets are stationary and connected to the case of the motor, and the permanent magnets are on the rotating assembly between the electromagnets.

Things You'll Need

  • Electronic speed controller
  • Electrical connectors
  • Wire strippers

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the wires for the brushless motor so that they are approximately 3/4 of an inch longer than the distance between your motor and electronic speed controller. Take wire strippers and strip 1/4-inch of wire shielding from each of the three wires that power the brushless RC motor.

    • 2

Attach an electric connector to the end of each wire, crimping the connector with the wire strippers to hold it in place.

    • 3

Insert the three wires into their respective color-coded slots on the electronic speed controller, checking to make certain that the wires don't wiggle excessively inside the slot.

    • 4

Wire the two power leads from the electronic speed controller to the battery. On some electronic speed controllers, you have to plug the battery into the controller. Others have integrated wiring.
