Scrapbook Caption Ideas

Scrapbooking is a classic pasttime that remains popular with many today; as the Craft and Hobby Association reports, 35 percent of U.S. households participated in scrapbooking in 2009. Scrapbooks may include various paper mementos such as wedding invitations and birth notices, but the most prevalent items in your scrapbook will be photographs. To keep a reminder of who is in each picture, when it was taken, and what event people were attending, enhance the scrapbook by including captions near the photos.
  1. Sticker Captions

    • Instead of physically writing in the scrapbook, place sticker captions near the photo or scrapbook item. The sticker captions should complement the image they are surrounding. For example, for a picture of a newborn baby, adding a sticker with the words "I didn't do it!" serves as a witty caption. For something more heartfelt, add a caption that says something like "I love my mommy." Purchase pre-made caption stickers or special-order your own personalized stickers from printing companies.

    Poems and Quotes

    • Sometimes favorite poems and quotes most complement the images and memories of your life. Locate appropriate ones for each photo, and then copy the poem or quote with the citation of who originally wrote the poem or said the quote. For example, if you're scrapbooking your son's visit to Washington D.C., you might include a quote from your favorite president next to a picture of him in front of the White House. Choose types and patterns of paper that complement the poem or quote: one that holds meaning to you and a loved one to accompany a wedding anniversary portrait might be printed on a fine piece of linen stock, whereas a line from a Christmas carol to remember a family holiday dinner might be printed on holiday notepaper. Mount the quotes into the scrapbook using scrapbook adhesive.

    Names, Dates and Places

    • Though you may know every single person in a photo you are scrapbooking, others you plan on sharing the scrapbook with may not. Place the name of everyone in the photo, date and the event you were attending or celebrating. For a less formal approach, you may use only first names of people in the photo; for a more formal approach, include a full description with eloquent writing styles such as cursive or calligraphy. Match the style to the type of event. For example, a more informal writing style is appropriate for a backyard barbecue, while a black-tie event calls for a more formal approach. Captions such as these may be handwritten directly onto the scrapbook or printed on notepaper and then mounted with scrapbook adhesive, depending on your preference and the type of scrapbook used.

    Ticket Stubs

    • Ticket stubs are not only a memento of an event, but also provide the what, where and when of that event. Therefore, use an old ticket stub to correspond with an event you attended and have it serve as a caption. Choose to place the entire ticket stub in the scrapbook or just cut out the pertinent pieces. For example, if you are scrapbooking a concert, place the name of the band, night of the event and name of the arena where the concert was held next to corresponding photos.

    Stamps

    • A more fun and unusual twist on adding captions to your photos is by using stamps. Purchase stamps with words or phrases such as "Happy Birthday" "Merry Christmas" or "Happy New Year" and place them below corresponding photos of when you and your family were celebrating that event. For greater personalization, purchase a letter and number stamp set that contains both letters and numbers. Then, stamp out whole words or phrases such as names, dates, places and phrases of your own that correspond to the image using the stamp set and an ink pad.
