How to Make a Straight Chucking Reamer

Reamers are a tool that are used on power tools such as a drill to increase the size of an existing hole in a piece of wood or metal. To make a straight chuck reamer, you can use a metal file. This is done with a bench grinder to shape the metal file into the contours for the reamer. First, however, you will need to determine the size of reamer that you want to make.

Sheet pan
Metal file
Pot holders
Safety glasses
Bench grinder

  Turn on the oven in your kitchen and preheat it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Wash the metal file with soap and water to remove any dirt and grease.

  Set the metal file on a sheet pan. Open the door and place the sheet pan in the oven. Leave the metal file in the oven for at least an hour. This will temper the metal and slightly decrease its hardness.

  Remove the sheet pan from the oven with the pot holders. The metal file will have a straw color which may darken as the metal cools.

  Transfer the metal file to your garage or workshop. Put on a pair of safety glasses and then turn on your grinder.

  Grind the sides of the file until smooth. Round the edges of the file into a shallow bevel. One end of the bevel is for the cutting edge and the other is for clearance to allow it to spin in the hole.
