Habitat
Saltwater trout are commonly found in the western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, from New York down to Florida and Texas. The trout tend to prefer shallow bays that attract their prey. In the fall, they tend to move to deeper waters as temperatures dip.
Baiting Equipment
Any equipment you use to fish for saltwater trout should be capable of withstanding the corrosive capabilities of saltwater. Your fishing rod should be capable of light to medium action. A popular tackle fishermen use for these fish is a cork rig. You should pop the cork periodically in an imitation of live action. Instead of a cork, any other small weight will do.
Natural Bait
Live shrimp serves as the best bait for saltwater trout. Dead shrimp will also serve the purpose, as will live fish such as mullet or pinfish. When fishing from a boat, or from an area that has strong tides, let the bait float on the water until it attracts the fish.
Artificial Bait
Artificial bait can also be used for catching saltwater trout year round. For instance, you can use spoons, preferably silver ones, during the warmer months. Artificial lures that resemble fish also serve during the colder months. While you can use the lures throughout the year, they are particularly useful during the colder months. As the lure floats on the water, the saltwater trout tend to be attracted to it. You should change the size and color of the artificial lure until you find the combination that has the best impact.
