How to Build Storage Under a Leaning Post Seat

A leaning post seat is a temporary seat for fishing poles. Many fishermen leave their fishing poles on the leaning post until fish start to bite. The posts can also hold the fishing poles out of the way while driving the boat or engaging in other tasks. Usually, there is an empty space below the leaning post. To maximize space on the boat, you can make a small wood storage box to go below the leaning post to keep tackle and other fishing items while on the boat.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space below the leaning post. Cut two pieces of plywood 1 inch shorter than the length. Cut two pieces 1 inch narrower than the width. Make the boards short enough to fit under the leaning post. Cut two boards for the top and bottom. Make the bottom board small enough to fit inside the other boards, but the top board should rest on top of the other pieces.

    • 2

Cut the edges of each board to a 45 degree angle with a miter saw. Make the cuts opposite angles so that the edges of the board align into a square shape. Screw the sides of the box together with waterproof screws.

    • 3

Screw the bottom of the box inside the walls of the box.

    • 4

Sand the box with sandpaper. Stain or paint the box the desired color and allow the stain or paint to dry. Apply a polyurethane sealer to all sides of the box to protect it from the water and drying elements. Allow the sealer to dry for 24 hours before using the box.

    • 5

Place the lid on top of the box. Attach two hinges about 2 inches away from either side of the box to secure the lid over the box. Add a latch to the front of the box to prevent it from opening on its own.

    • 6

Screw the box to the space below the leaning post to prevent it from shifting in rough water. You can also leave it loose if you plan to move the leaning post at any point. Secure the box to the leaning post with stretchy cord to prevent it from slipping.
