How to Repair the Switch on a Coralife Aqualight

It is easy to replace in-cord switches on small home appliances provided the manufacturer makes separate replacement parts. Coralife Aqualight replacement switches are available through aquarium supply houses. The Aqualight is a compact fluorescent lighting fixture for aquariums that comes in sizes from 12 inches to 48 inches long. It is a relatively low-cost system that offers some of the features seen on more-expensive fixtures, such as lighting timers and cooling fans to keep water temperature stable.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the lighting system from the power source to prevent accidental shock.

    • 2

Take out the replacement switch. Use wirecutters to cut the lead wires from the old switch so that what you remove will be roughly the same length as the lead wires on the replacement unit. Make sure to note which wire was connected to which lead. The replacement switch has two different color lead wires. Mark down which goes where if it is not obvious.

    • 3

Strip away just enough insulation from the wires to which you will connect the replacement switch to allow for them to be connected with the wire nuts.

    • 4

Connect the lead wires to the main wiring using the wire nuts. Tape over the connection with electrical tape after you have secured the connection. The electrical tape prevents children from disconnecting the connection and getting an accidental shock.

    • 5

Plug the unit back in and turn it on.
