How to Make a Rapid Fire Crossbow

A crossbow is unlike a bow and arrow because you hold the arrow in position for aiming before releasing it to fire at the target. You can make your own crossbow from supplies found around the house or from a stationery store if necessary. The procedure is straightforward and the construction will enable you to rapidly reload after firing.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 #2 pencils
  • Ruler
  • 4 rubber bands, 4 inches long, 1/4th inch diameter
  • PVC tube, 8 inches long, 1/4th inch diameter
  • Masking tape
  • Cellophane tape
  • Thumbtack
  • Wooden dowels, 6 inches long, 1/8th-inch diameter

Instructions

    • 1

Place two pencils against each other horizontally on a table. Measure two inches from each of the two ends of the pencils. Wrap a rubber band around each of the two ends at the two-inch marks. Run the end of each rubber band through the loop formed around the pencils. Tie a knot in the end of the rubber band. Make a second set of two pencils with two rubber bands in the same way.

    • 2

Place one set of the pencils on the table vertically. Place the second set of pencils horizontally on the pencils so that the middle of the two pencils rests up against the rubber band on the side closest to you.

    • 3

Wrap a rubber band around the two set of pencils where they meet each other. Run the end of the rubber band through the loop formed around the two sets of pencils. Tie a knot in the end of the rubber band.

    • 4

Measure the distance between the two rubber bands on the set of pencils lying vertically. Cut the PVC tube to the length of this measurement with scissors.

    • 5

Place the tube on top of the set of vertically placed pencils. Move the tube so that each end is over the rubber bands on the set of pencils. Place a strip of masking tape around the tube where it meets the rubber band on each end. Smooth the tape down with your finger.

    • 6

Run the loop at the end of a rubber band between the two pencils lying horizontally to your left. Push the rubber band up against the rubber band that is holding the two pencils together. Wind a strip of cellophane tape around the two pencils to the left of the rubber band that you have just moved.

    • 7

Run the loop at the end of a rubber band between the two pencils lying horizontally to your right. Push the rubber band up against the rubber band that is holding the two pencils together. Wind a strip of cellophane tape around the two pencils to the right of the rubber band that you have just moved. Push the point of a thumbtack into one of the two vertically placed pencils at the very end closest to you.

    • 8

Wrap a strip of masking tape around one end of the wooden dowel. Wrap masking tape strips around an end of all of the wooden dowels. Insert the end of one of the wooden dowels that doesn̵7;t have tape on it into the tube from the side closest to you. Rest the end of the dowel that has the tape on it against the thumbtack.

    • 9

Pull both of the ends of the rubber bands back toward you. Place the loop at the ends of the rubber bands around the thumbtack.

    • 10

Aim your rapid fire crossbow at a bush or tree outside, after making sure no one is standing next to it. Pull the two rubber bands off the thumbtack and against the tape of the dowel. Release the rubber bands to fire the dowel at the tree. Pull the rubber bands back around the thumbtack. Load another dowel, pull the rubber bands off the thumbtack and place them against the dowel. Release the rubber bands to fire another dowel at the target. Repeat this until you no longer have dowels to shoot.
